Chuck Schumer Wants Special DEA Heroin Team in New York City

New York City and its airports have become a major distribution hub of high-quality heroin that makes its way across the state, into Long Island, Nassau County, Suffolk County, and all the boroughs. Some senators such as Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate Minority Leader from New York, have called for special DEA heroin teams to be dispatched to New York City.
Data recently released by the NYC Department of Health paints a dire picture when it comes to the heroin epidemic:

“In 2016, there were 1,374 drug overdose deaths, 437 more than the previous year. This marked the sixth consecutive year that overdose deaths have increased. Overdose rates rose among all demographic groups and among residents of nearly every New York City neighborhood.”

Heroin and other narcotics are often smuggled via routes in Kennedy Airport as they arrive from South America. The federal budget for the fiscal year 2017 includes an increase in funding for DEA heroin teams and Chuck Schumer has been leading the charge to address the New York City heroin epidemic. He has suggested that one of the newly funded heroin enforcement squads should have a permanent presence in New York City to help fight heroin addiction and distribution. This heroin crisis response team would assign 42 agents, including 32 special narcotics agents.

The DEA has been overwhelmed with the heroin crisis in New York and extra help would certainly be a benefit in the approach to curbing drug abuse across the Big Apple. A recent New York City drug overdose report states that on average there are at least four fatal drug overdoses every single day across NYC.

“Recent increases in drug busts, overdoses and emergency calls across New York City and Long Island all tied to heroin tell the story of an epidemic that needs more attention and action by the feds to foil,” – U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer

Assigning a DEA heroin team in New York City will be a step in the fight direction in the fight against opioid abuse. Local, state, and federal officials have to work together on a coordinated response to the heroin epidemic in NYC.
