New York Considers Supervised Drug Injection Sites
There is a growing movement to create supervised drug injection sites across New York. A coalition called End Overdose NY is pushing a campaign to sponsor legislation that would allow New York State to establish “supervised consumption spaces” for drug addicts. One of the bills co-sponsors, Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, has an interesting take on the reasoning behind supervised injection sites.
“No one has ever died in a safe consumption site,” said Assemblywoman Rosenthal.
Drug overdoses are skyrocketing in New York, with a rate of 16.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2016, up from a 13.5 death rate in 2015. As a result, some legislators believe that supervised injection sites in New York provide a safe and controlled environment for addicts to consume their drug of choice. With medical staff on-site and ready to intervene, these places could lower the rate of overdoses.
The problem with safe injection sites in New York and across the country lies in the harm reduction approach. Addicts are not treated for their substance abuse and are instead enabled to continue using without consequences. These drug injection spaces can lower the stigma of intravenous drug use which many people believe is detrimental to helping those in need. Intravenous drug use is extremely addictive and dangerous even in a controlled environment. The most effective approach to saving lives is through comprehensive addiction treatment that targets the root cause of substance abuse in each individual.
Raising awareness about the dangers of drug addiction is a positive step in the right direction, even if not everyone agrees what approach is the most effective. At Long Island Interventions, we believe in giving addicts an opportunity to enter drug treatment that is personalized to suit each person’s unique situation. Safe injection sites prolong the misery that comes along with injecting a deadly foreign substance into your body. While the criminal element is taken out of the equation, the health consequences remain and are often fatal in the long-term.
