Studies Show That Vodka And Redbull Produce a Cocaine-Like Effect

Over the summer, researchers at Purdue University released a study that details how mixing alcohol and energy drinks with a high caffeine content can have an effect that is strikingly similar to ingesting cocaine.

Alcohol And Redbull Produce Similar Effect to Taking Cocaine?

The groundbreaking study details how the behavioral and neurochemical changes in the brains of adolescent mice, after taking caffeine and alcohol, resemble the changes observed in mice that are on cocaine.

In our society, many young adults consume large quantities of vodka and alcohol that is often mixed with energy drinks such as Red Bull or Monster for a stronger intoxication. This makes young adults not only more susceptible to alcoholism in the future, but also to possibly trying illicit drugs that offer a similar but stronger sensation in the user.

Why are Caffeine and Alcohol is So Popular?

The popular combination of vodka and Red Bull is sought after by young adults because of the euphoria that is produced, creating feelings that mimic a cocaine-like intoxication. Energy drinks, like Red Bull and Monster, contain as much as ten times the caffeine as soft drinks and are often marketed to teenagers. We’ve learned from the study, as explained by Dr. van Rijn:

“Mice that had been exposed to alcohol and caffeine were somewhat numb to the rewarding effects of cocaine as adults…mice that were exposed to highly caffeinated alcoholic drinks later found cocaine wasn’t as pleasurable…they may then use more cocaine to get the same effect.”

Higher Likelihood Of Using Cocaine After Drinking Energy Drinks And Alcohol?

Here at New Objectives, we are concerned with the increased misuse and abuse of caffeine mixed with vodka and other alcoholic beverages. Through our analysis, we’ve learned from the study that people, especially young adults, who frequently drink energy drinks mixed with alcohol can have a higher likelihood of using cocaine at some point in the future, and it’s all to do with long-term behavioral and neurochemical changes to the brain.
