Substance Dependence on Long Island

Long Island has historically been a favorite destination for tourists. Its beautiful sandy beaches, the Hamptons, wine country, club life, cuisines, and museums give Long Island bragging rights to fun and relaxation…but there is also a dark side, the substance dependence problem on Long Island.

Long Island has become a hot spot for substance dependence. Several residents of the four counties are in the clutches of opioids, prescription pain pills, and alcohol. Families and friends can do little but watch their loved ones depend on drugs or alcohol to function normally.

Substance dependence on Long Island is now a crisis that has cast gloomy shadows on city life. It is also fast becoming a fatal epidemic. It is so bad that the Long Island Expressway, which runs east across the island from New York City, is dubbed the “Heroin Highway.”

Substance Dependence on Long Island

What is Substance Dependence?

Substance dependence, also known as drug dependence, is an adaptive state that results from repeated substance use. Users are dependent and not addicted to the substance yet.

Substance dependence occurs when you continually use alcohol or other drugs despite problems related to the substance. Continual use of a substance results from intolerance to the side effects. It also causes withdrawal symptoms when use is reduced or stopped. A user cannot function normally unless they use a substance.

Substance dependence is different from addiction. There is a thin line between the two. While it is possible to be dependent on a substance without being addicted, it could result in developing a high tolerance for that substance.

This leads to a desire for larger or more frequent doses. At some point, physical and psychological symptoms of withdrawal are observed when users attempt to stop using the substance.

Substances that cause addiction

The potential of becoming dependent on a substance varies from substance to substance, and from individual to individual. Some of the substances include:

  1. Heroin
  2. Cocaine
  3. Tobacco
  4. Opioids (Morphine, Fentanyl, Oxycontin, Vicodin)
  5. Sedatives (e.g. Ambien, ZolpiMist, Sonata, Lunesta)
  6. Alcohol
  7. Benzodiazepines (e.g. Xanax, Valium, Klonopin)
  8. Amphetamine
  9. Cannabis (Aka Mary Jane, Ganja, Pot, Hashish, Hemp)
  10. Ecstasy

Signs of Substance Dependence on Long Island

Substance dependence on Long Island is a slow poison that can gradually take over anyone. It can turn you or your loved one into someone you barely know. Quick recognition and swift action is the key to taking control. A person is substance dependent if they:

  1. Need increased amounts of the substance to get a desired high
  2. Have withdrawal symptoms if they decrease or stop using the substance
  3. Find it difficult to cut down or quit
  4. Spend a lot of time to get, use, and recover from the effects of the substance
  5. Have little to no interest in social and recreational activities
  6. Continue use even though they are aware of the physical, psychological, economic, family, and social problems that are caused by their dependence

Treatment for Substance Dependence

Varieties of treatment (or recovery) programs for substance dependence are available. These programs are usually based on the type of substance you are dependent on. Long Island detox centers (if needed, based on the substance) and long-term follow-up management are necessary for successful treatment.

Long-term follow-up management includes group meetings and support systems. It could also involve continual medical supervision.

Individual and family therapy are often recommended to address issues that may have contributed to and resulted from substance dependence by you or a loved one.
